Weekly Middle East Update: Strategic Developments and Humanitarian Concerns
by Melody Lovvorn
TLDR:
Amidst significant challenges, Israel’s strategic advancements and the uncovering of humanitarian atrocities bring hope for greater security, justice, and the possibility of restoration in the region.
Welcome to this week’s update on the rapidly changing situation in the Middle East. Recent events have brought significant shifts in the region, highlighting both strategic advancements and sobering humanitarian challenges.
Here’s what you need to know:
Israel has recently taken control of the Hermon Mountain and portions of the Golan Heights previously held by Syria. This marks a critical move for the nation’s security. By securing the highest vantage point in the region, Israel has established strategic oversight over Syria and Lebanon. This advancement not only strengthens Israel’s defensive position but also serves as a safeguard against extremist groups that could otherwise use these areas as bases for attacks.
After 54 years of brutal rule, the Assad regime in Syria has collapsed. Bashar al-Assad, known as the “Death Doctor,” has fled with his family, reportedly seeking refuge in Russia. The regime’s downfall is a significant blow to Iran’s influence in the Middle East, as Syria served as a critical hub for its operations, including supporting Hezbollah and Hamas. With this base dismantled, extremist groups and Iran’s foothold in the region are severely weakened.
In the aftermath of the regime’s collapse, rebel forces have uncovered horrific atrocities committed by Assad’s government. Underground prisons have been found containing children, women, and other prisoners who endured years of unspeakable torture. Many survivors are so traumatized that they cannot even recall their names or origins. Efforts are underway to free and provide aid to these individuals, but the scale of the trauma is staggering. These discoveries highlight the cruelty of Assad’s rule, with estimates of up to one million deaths under his regime.
While Israel’s strategic gains are vital, the region remains volatile. The rebel groups that overthrew Assad include extremist factions such as former ISIS and Al-Qaeda affiliates. Israel’s swift actions to secure critical areas aim to prevent these groups from establishing a presence near its borders. However, the situation demands continued vigilance and strategic foresight.
Pray: Pray for stability in the region, for the safety and recovery of survivors, and for wisdom and discernment for leaders navigating these challenges. Educate: Stay informed about the complexities of the Middle East and the human impact of these conflicts.
Support: Consider contributing to organizations working on the ground to provide humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict.
These events underscore the fragility and resilience of the Middle East. As part of the Togetherness Project, we remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering peace, providing support, and advocating for recovery efforts in the region.
Let's remain hopeful and committed to seeing justice, peace, and restoration in this region,
Melody

What is the Heart Behind the Togetherness Project?
by Melody Lovvorn
Togetherness:
All of you together are the one body of Christ, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it.
1 Corinthinians 12:27
Twenty-four years ago, my life was turned upside down. With four young children under the age of six, I faced a deeply traumatic experience when my husband’s secret life was revealed, shattering the foundation we had built during our years of ministry together. Picking up the pieces felt impossible at first, but it led me to a counselor’s office where I began my journey of healing and restoration. That process of rebuilding my life ignited a passion in me to bring empathy and compassion to others, healing from their own pain.
After a decade of personal and spiritual growth, I felt God calling me to serve women who had experienced betrayal trauma, as well as couples and families in crises. Over 15 years, I witnessed countless stories of redemption, transformation, and hope—watching death give way to resurrection in the lives of others was nothing short of beautiful and miraculous. This work deepened my conviction that healing is possible for anyone willing to embark on the journey.
In recent months, my mission has expanded in very unexpected ways. In September, a mutual friend introduced me to Gil Ilutowich, recognizing how our unique backgrounds could intersect in a powerful way. Gil’s expertise in creating educational and biblical platforms, such as the Museum of the Bible, combined with my experience in trauma training and content creation, felt nothing short of providential. Born and still living in Israel, Gil shared with many of us the profound, generational trauma his country has endured. Families, parents, children, and entire communities are navigating the aftermath of unimaginable pain, especially following the devastating attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Gil explained that some individuals have endured so many years of trauma that they are now unable to speak, highlighting the critical need for tools and resources to help people begin their journey toward healing.
Reflecting on my own experiences—writing trauma-healing content, developing courses for families worldwide, and conducting training in countries like Ukraine and Uganda—I felt God nudging me toward a broader vision. Now, I am resolved on partnering with Gil and others to bring practical, trauma-informed recovery resources to Israel and beyond.
Together, we aim to offer hope and healing to those living with the scars of trauma, creating tools that can be used to restore hearts, families, and communities. This work isn’t just about healing wounds; it’s about bringing the light of the gospel to a hurting world, trusting that God can redeem and re-purpose, even the deepest pain for His glory.
Addressing Trauma and Mental Health Globally
Across the world, individuals and families bear the long-term impacts of war, systemic poverty, and abuse. These challenges create cycles of trauma that hinder emotional well-being and relational growth. Togetherness Project offers culturally adaptable trauma-informed curriculum to help people process pain, develop resilience, and build healthier futures.
What is the Togetherness Project Doing?
We are expanding our trauma-healing curriculum and developing innovative tools to equip individuals with the skills and support they need to navigate life’s challenges.
Our key initiatives include:
Trauma-Informed Curriculum: Creating and providing trauma healing curriculum for children, teens, adults, and families to address the emotional and relational impacts of trauma. Each age group has to have their own age appropriate trauma healing curriculum. We've created and developed this so that teachers, coaches and counselors can teach this in schools and churches.
Translating Trauma-Informed Curriculum: We are currently in need of donations to translate our trauma-healing curriculum into Hebrew, ensuring it is accessible for communities in Israel. This step is crucial in extending our mission to foster healing and restoration for those affected by trauma.
Trauma-Informed Training for Coaches and Counselors and Volunteers: We are developing comprehensive training materials to certify counselors and coaches and volunteers in trauma-informed healing, equipping them with the skills needed to bring hope, resilience, and restoration to those they serve. Together, these initiatives will empower individuals and communities to heal and thrive.
Eva, Your Emotional Virtual Assistant: An AI-powered decision-making and wellness tool that offers personalized emotional support and coping strategies. Accessible at evahelp.me, Eva helps users build emotional intelligence, supports decision-making and mental resilience.
